Caper Crush

A feel-good, opposites-attract, slow burn romantic comedy

Somebody stole my painting! The one I need for the career-defining Vertex Art Exhibit. This upcoming art show is my chance to finally be recognized as an artist—after ten years of waitressing and being asked if I still have that “lovely painting hobby.”

I have mere weeks to find my painting or lose my artist dream forever—but it’s going to mean working with William.

William Haruki Matsumura. Good-looking, if you like the Secret Service type. You know, law-abiding, protector of women and children. That’s all fine, but I can never tell what he’s thinking. Which drives me crazy.

He insists on coming along to do “damage control.” As if “accidentally” wandering into certain areas is “breaking and entering.” I may be an emotional artist, but William shouldn’t dismiss my investigative skills yet.

William is definitely my opposite, and, if there’s one takeaway from my parents’ divorce, it’s that opposites might attract, but it doesn’t last. But detecting with William is kind of fun—and fluttery. I definitely can’t trust these feelings, or can I? However this caper ends, I think this may be more than a crush.

What are your favorite romantic comedies and why?

I have so many favorites!! My favorite romantic comedies ARE HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS, ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE, OVERBOARD (THE ORIGINAL), THE PROPOSAL, and BRIDGET JONES DIARY. I could discuss romantic comedies for days 😊

HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS has a brilliant comic premise (she is writing a women’s magazine article about how to lose a guy in 10 days and he has 10 days to persuade her to fall in love with him so he can win the right to pitch an advertising campaign about diamonds) because the conflict is built right into it. And the comedy is hilarious as she does everything she can to make him dump her. But, no matter what she does, he is going to keep dating her. Which makes her even more desperate. The “diamonds are forever” angle adds another layer of conflict. He reminds himself that diamonds are forever, so this isn’t a one-night stand. He wants to take it slow, changing the music and moving away from the bed; she is trying to make sure he is hooked by kissing him. It’s also a twist on the “clumsy, emotionally open” romcom heroine because Andie is super cool and is only acting like the clingy and immediately emotionally open girlfriend to write the article.

I think ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE has brilliant witty dialogue, and that restaurant scene with Keanu Reeves is hilarious. I also love the tropes of friends-to-lovers and opposites attract, and it has both. Plus, I think it does a great job of showing how the person they’re currently dating is wrong for them, and why Sasha and Marcus are right for each other.

OVERBOARD. The comic premise here is really well done here too. Plus, the chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell is both slow-burn and sizzling.

I recently re-watched THE PROPOSAL, and it has such brilliant banter. And fake dating is one of my favorite tropes so there’s that. Plus, I love her character arc, and that slow burn falling-in-love.

In BRIDGET JONES DIARY, I love her character and her friends, the fizzy chemistry with Hugh Grant and with Colin Firth, and the banter. I also think the triangle is brilliantly done.

And lately I’ve also become addicted to Korean dramas. I love the slow-burn, the deep character development, the comic relief, the exposure to another culture (and the scenery!), and the romance! Korean dramas usually have 16 one-hour episodes, and the first kiss is in episode eight, so that’s the slow burn I’m talking about. But before that, there’s the hand touch, the glance, the walk in the rain etc.

If you haven’t watched a Korean drama, I highly recommend CRASH LANDING ON YOU and BUSINESS PROPOSAL. Clear your schedule if you watch CRASH LANDING ON YOU because it is so addictive!! It’s a combination of a romance, comedy and suspenseful thriller. She’s a South Korean businesswoman who is paragliding in South Korea when a tornado knocks her into North Korea. He’s a North Korean soldier trying to protect her and get her back home. And BUSINESS PROPOSAL has a hilarious first date scene when she’s trying to get rid of him so she’s acting as crazy as possible. And they’re also fun because you can join in conversations globally to discuss them (on Twitter, Facebook, Dramabeans etc.).
