About the Book

Falling for the Competition by Jen Smith

It’s going to be the best summer ever for ambitious, overachieving Quinn. A huge history buff, not only has she landed her dream job interning in the archives department of the local castle, but her best friend will be working there too.

However, Quinn isn’t the only one to be working in Archives this summer; Quinn’s academic rival, Patrick, is sharing her office in Muniments. They’re competing for the Letter of Recommendation (singular) from the research historian that Quinn needs to get her dream future placement.

Their emotionally-loaded and competitive rivalry turns into a reluctant friendship, as they spend every day working together in silence (and sharing the occasional Twix). Until the Re-Enactors arrive. Between Patrick and Harry – the Golden Knight of the jousting team – Quinn’s carefully planned summer is thrown into complete disarray. Meanwhile, her best friend’s relationship may look perfect on the outside, but Quinn is starting to realise that there’s more going on than there seems.

Although Quinn is determined and single minded about planning every detail of her sparkling future, she comes to discover that the best things in life are the spontaneous ones – and that some people are more important than any Letter of Recommendation (singular) could ever be.

Author Interview

Hi Jen, Welcome to Chicks, Rogues and Scandals! Thank you for taking the time to chat with me today.

Firstly, what five words would you use to describe yourself?

Oh gosh um; determined, shy, protective, sensitive, ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS (not really, but I like to think so)

Can you tell us a little about your latest/up and coming release?

Falling for the Competition is a geeky YA contemporary swoonfest, that I absolutely adore. It’s castles and knights, enemies to lovers, snarky girls and sunshiny boys, as well as difficult friendships and a toxic relationship.

When not writing, what do you like to do to relax?

I love to read! I beta read and critique with the best little group ever. I love an action film (think Bruce Willis and anything with Steven Segal), and the stinkiest, softest cheese.

If you could have a holiday home anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The Languedoc in the south of France. With a pool. It’s perfect there, I wouldn’t just holiday, I would live there full time if I could. The history, the hazy Mediterranean days, the castles, the food (the wine). Perfect.

If you could have one of your books made into a film, which book would it be and who would play your lead characters?

Well, it’s got to be Falling for the Competition and Zendaya is Quinn. Oh oh! Or Emma Watson! All over it.

When writing, do you plot or do you go with the flow?

I am a MASSIVE plotter. If I don’t, then I get to about thirty thousand words and the only thing my characters have done is go to the shop for a cornetto. I have character sheets, scene sheets, beat sheets, long synopsis, short synopsis, lots of planning.

What three tips would you pass on to an aspiring author?

  1. You can’t edit a blank page! You can always make words better, but unless you write them, they won’t magically appear on a blank page. I didn’t say this, but it’s the best advice I’ve ever heard.
  2. Don’t write for other people, write for yourself. Write what you love, because it shows in your words.
  3. Don’t give up!

All of this advice sounds really cheesy, but it’s helped me!

If you were hosting a dinner party what three people would you invite?

  1. Freddie Mercury, because who wouldn’t invite the best frontman of all time?
  2. King John, because
    1. I love him
    2. He has such a bad reputation, and it’s so unfair and we could set the record straight
  3. My sister in law, Beth, because she is HILARIOUS and we don’t see nearly enough of each other. She’d get on with John as well.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to chat with me today, I have just one more cheeky question, just for fun; What is your favourite snacking food?

CRISPS. CRISPS.

Thank you, Frankie x

About the Author

Jen lives in the Midlands with her husband and two children. With a Masters Degree in Medieval History, Jen loves castles and King John a little too much. Strangely un-British, she does not like tea, oranges or marzipan, but adores French cheese, guava juice and Chinese food (not together).

When not writing, Jen can often be found pointing out historical inaccuracies in period dramas, being a Lady that Lunches with close friends and playing board games with her family. Note: her handbags are always heavy due to multiple books (just in case she needs them).
