Hi Karmen, Welcome to Chicks, Rogues and Scandals! Thank you for taking the time to chat with me today.
Firstly, what five words would you use to describe yourself?
Curious, reserved, cat loving creative.
Can you tell us a little about your latest/up-and-coming release?
‘No Such Thing as Goodbye’ is a thriller about a mobster’s sister, who fakes her death to escape her two brothers and their life of crime. In Mexico City, where she starts anew, she finds work as a spy, but her past won’t leave her alone. When she finds out her older brother is on his way to Mexico, she needs to decide whether to run once more or to risk her life for a chance of freedom. It’s the first book in the Antonia Morretti series.
When not writing, what do you like to do to relax?
I love reading, cooking, listening to podcasts and talking long walks and am definitely partial to the occasional crafts project.
If you could have a holiday home anywhere in the world, where would it be?
If not in the gorgeous little town of Datça in Turkey, then I’d definitely not mind taking most of my holidays in Istanbul. It’s a city I fell in love with the first time I visited, and I am still happy to return there when possible.
If you could have one of your books made into a film, which book would it be and who would play your lead characters?
If ‘No Such Thing as Goodbye’ was turned into a film, I’d love to see Millie Bobbie Brown cast as Toni Morretti and perhaps Pilou Asbæk as Carl Lindhardt.
When writing, do you plot or do you go with the flow?
I do both, some plotting ahead with my novels and quite a lot of discovery writing in between. I’ve found that combining the two works best for me, though I like to try something new with each novel, so you never know.
What three tips would you pass on to an aspiring author?
Trust your gut instincts, know what you want to achieve as a writer and find a writer’s group that will help you develop further.
If you were hosting a dinner party what three people would you invite?
I’m quite a private person, so I’d probably invite three close friends and perhaps a handful of characters.
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to chat with me today, I have just one more cheeky question, just for fun; What is your favourite snacking food?
I’ve got a bar of dark chocolate stored in my drawer for emergencies and I’m definitely partial to a good cocada, a popular Brazilian coconut sweet, and warm tapioca cubes with spicy jam. I cannot live without them.

Karmen Špiljak is a Slovenian-Belgian writer of suspense, horror and speculative fiction.
Her short fiction has been awarded and anthologised. Her thriller, ‘No Such Thing as Goodbye’, was shortlisted and received an honourable mention at ‘The Black Spring Crime Fiction Prize 2020’.
She lives in Sao Paulo with her husband, two mischievous cats and an undefined number of literary characters.
