Review

You wouldn’t believe how excited I am to actually start a brand new series from the beginning instead of halfway through (which is what I usually do), plus not only that but finally sit down and read a book by an author who I have been wanting to read (and yet never actually read one) for ages, despite having a few of her books sitting idly on my kindle. I am kicking myself for leaving it so long to read her books, but I will certainly rectify that as soon as possible, starting with those I have already got.

The Highlander’s Substitute Wife is a gorgeous romance, Ross must marry the MacDonnell daughter as a way to keep his lands, only once at the alter he faces his bride, lifts the veil and is shocked that the woman before isn’t the daughter he agreed to marry but her sister.

What is going on?

Ross has no choice to go through with the marriage, he knows where his loyalties lie and so he and Ilysa say their I do’s.

I love both Ross and Ilysa, they are a wonderful and compelling couple, Ross is a proud, loyal and duty-bund man, he will do whatever is necessary for his clan, its people and for his land. He is every inch the unwavering, solid, kind, grumbling, gorgeous swoon-worthy Shighlnader – this man could completely ruin me, my goodness I am in love!!

Give me a man in growling man in a kilt any day!😍

Hmmm, I could just be looking at Ross with this gif!

I love how treats Ilysa, despite that she isn’t the woman he intended to marry they are made for each other, he shows that not all men are manipulative buggers, and that she can trust and allow herself to be happy. Despite being a big man he is so gentle, so tender it’s adorable watching him as he slowly earns her trust, he respects her for herself ad doesn’t just see her as a commodity like others have. Ilysa once thought she is free, she was living in peace away from her vile and manipulative father only to find herself dragged back and married off to a complete stranger. She fears that this is it, she is trapped in a marriage and a life of torment a piece on her father’s and this other man’s game of chess. But she is surprised to find that Ross isn’t at all like that, he is everything a woman would want in a husband.

I really like Ilysa she is a little reserved but judging by how she has had to live in her life under the thumb of a narcissistic manipulator you can understand why, but beneath that she is a strong intelligent and kind woman, like ross she cares deeply and will do whatever she can to protect those around her, I liked her generous spirit and how well she and ross work together. They really do make a great couple, once they overcome the hurdles that they must face as the story moves forward their relationship gets stronger and forms a friendship and it soon blossoms into a gorgeous seductive romance.

The Highlander’s Substitute Wife is an enemy to lovers romance, which is easily my favourite of all tropes, yet I think it would easily fall into being a marriage of convenience too I would have liked a little more enemies to lovers tension and turmoil, a bit of too-ing and froing a bit more bickering or animosity, but that’s just me! This is really a great book, and a great start to what I think is going to be a highly engaging and addictive series, |I can’t wait to read the next books in the series.

There is so much to love about this book, not only is there this gorgeous romance that is full of drama and emotion but you have danger, mystery, thrills, suspense and intrigue wrapped in a glossy bow of mesmerising atmosphere.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, it’s got everything you’d want from a historical romance; fabulously likeable and charismatic characters, wonderfully engaging plot, incredible setting – after all you can’t go wrong with Scotland.😍

I loved how the story flowed it has great pacing you become completely invested in the story, overall a brilliant read, a must-read, just read it!
