About the Book

A Rake Like You by Becky Michaels.

Series: Linfield Hall #2

Genre: Regency, Historical Romance.

About to turn thirty, Charles Finch finally realizes his luck has run out. He’s twenty thousand pounds in debt, his entire family hates him, and the powerful Duke of Rutley is watching his every move. So Charles sets out to do what any handsome but impoverished earl would: find a young lady with an impressive dowry to marry him and replenish his coffers.

Louisa Strickland much prefers managing the successful estate her father left her to the company of society. But now that her younger sister has come of age, Louisa finds herself in Mayfair, forced to protect her family from desperate fortune hunters like her neighbor, Charles Finch. And when Charles sets his sights on Louisa’s sister, Louisa will do anything to avert his attention elsewhere.

As Charles and Louisa find themselves rekindling an old friendship that once went up in flames, Charles begins to wonder if there could be something more between them. He only needs to prove he’s not the man he once was. But unfortunately for Charles, it will take much more than passionate kisses and giving up brandy to convince independent Louisa to marry a rake like him.

Review

A Rake Like You is the second in the Linfield Hall series, usually, at this part of the review I would say how you can easily read this as a stand-alone but not here, I do think that you need to read the previous book first because I hadn’t I did at times feel as though I had missed out on something, but it didn’t dampen my overall enjoyment of the book and I did enjoy it, it was a perfect way to escape the chaos for a few hours.

I love, love, love this cover….scroll up and have a peek, go on I’ll just loiter here for a minute until you come back.

Back? Isn’t it gorgeous? I love it, it reflects the story so perfectly!

I have to admit that I was a little confused by what was going on at first, the beginning felt like watching the second episode of a tv drama and missing the cliff-hanger – does that make sense? But, that feeling soon melted away as the story steadily picked up the pace.

I enjoyed Becky Michaels writing, this is the first I’ve read from her, it certainly won’t be the last. I loved her fun, emotional and passionate writing. I liked the banter between the characters, I am a big fan of fun and touches of humour wit within historical and Michaels has got it to spot on.

A Rake Like you is a fun and entertaining romance, at first I have to admit that I wasn’t 100% keen on Louisa and Charles as a couple, they didn’t seem right at all I doubt they were even friends let alone to be more, but yet I was proven wrong and they did end up to be a cute couple. I liked how they grew as people and as a couple before your eyes, Charles was quite immature at first, a bit of a rake and a black sheep, I have to be honest and say that it took me a long time to warm to him, as much as it sounds harsh but characters like him need to be brought low to fully be redeemed and this is what happened to Charles and then he starts to be more human.

Whereas I liked Louisa instantly, she is a strong resilient woman. I liked her determination and the way she put others first before her happiness, Louisa spoke to me, I connected with her and was backing her from first meeting her and I did wonder why smart and feisty Louisa would look twice at a notorious layabout, a no-good rake like Charles – but, hey each to their own I suppose. But at least she does make him work hard, that’s a girl you put the bugger through his paces! 😉

Despite my reservations about the couple being just that a couple, I did enjoy the story, it’s far more twisty and complex than I originally thought and was pleasantly surprised by how invested I became. The slow-burn romance is great fun to watch unravel and then when they do give in and cement their relationship as something more – well that is very steamy.

Overall, A delightful and fun romance that sparkles with Regency glitter and stardust.
